Holocaust survivor who went through four concentration camps killed in Ukraine by Russian strikes

A 96-year-old man who survived the Nazi dying camps of Buchenwald, Peenemuende, Dora and Bergen-Belsen was killed Friday when his house in Kharkiv, Ukraine, got here beneath Russian assault.

Boris Romanchenko’s dying was introduced Monday by Germany’s Buchenwald focus camp memorial institute. Citing Romanchenko’s relations, the memorial stated he was killed when his house in Kharkiv was struck by obvious artillery fireplace.

“Boris Romantschenko campaigned intensively for the reminiscence of the Nazi crimes,” the institute stated on Twitter, including that he had been vp of the Buchenwald-Dora Worldwide Committee, a survivors’ group.

The mayor of Lviv, Ukraine, mourned Romanchenko in a Telegram put up.

“He was killed by a Russian missile in his condominium throughout a ‘denazification operation,'” Mayor Andriy Sadovy wrote. “The brand new fascists proceed the work of Hitler.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly known as his unprovoked invasion of Ukraine a “denazification,” falsely claiming that Ukraine is committing “genocide” towards its Russian-speaking inhabitants.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is Jewish, and speaks fluent Russian, as do many Ukrainians.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest metropolis, sits a mere 25 miles from the Russian border. It has been beneath bombardment for a month, because the begin of Russia’s invasion.

Authorities stated Monday that a 9-year-old boy was killed within the newest spherical of shelling on Sunday.
